Cloud manufacturing ERP: replatform the pain, not the whole plant

Written from Velosius plant-to-cloud programmes — overnight batch jobs, rented iron, and a strangler path a UK line can keep running. Ishara Bandara reviewed the FinOps and rollback notes.
Most manufacturing ERP software RFPs start with a vendor bake-off. The plant already has an ERP. The pain is the batch job that still runs on a box you pay datacentre rent for, the spreadsheet that sits between MRP and the warehouse, and the fact that seasonal demand means buying more iron. Cloud manufacturing ERP, done honestly, is a strangler — not a weekend cutover.
What “cloud manufacturing ERP” should mean in the first 90 days
Pick one operational loop: overnight planning, shop-floor confirmations, or inventory that finance cannot reconcile. Move that loop into your AWS or Azure account with managed databases, monitoring, and a rollback. Custom ERP development earns its keep here — a thin service beside the legacy core, not a greenfield twin of SAP.
- Leave the system of record where it is until the new path has a month of clean closes.
- Do not dual-write every table. Dual-write the one document the plant cannot lose.
- Put FinOps on the bill from week one — Ishara’s rule: seasonal peaks should not mean a surprise invoice.
Manufacturing operations management software vs a new ERP
Manufacturing operations management software is often the real buy: scheduling, confirmations, quality holds. A full ERP replacement is a five-year political programme. Mid-market UK and US plants rarely have a 40-person PMO. If a packaged cloud ERP already covers 80 percent, buy it and integrate. If the process is the plant — discrete routing, OT boundaries, a line that cannot pause — you need custom ERP development beside the core, with named engineers on hypercare.
ERP integration service, not a slide
An ERP integration service that works looks boring: one API, one owner, one live path. We have run this as plant-to-cloud — replatform the pain first. ERP solutions for manufacturing that never ship are the ones that try to replace finance, inventory, and MES in one statement of work.
- Weeks 1–2 — inventory the batch jobs, the OT/IT boundary, and what can retire.
- Weeks 3–6 — strangler the highest-cost loop into your cloud account.
- Weeks 7–10 — operators on the new path; error rates and p95 on a dashboard they will actually open.
- Weeks 11–12 — hypercare with authority to roll back without a committee.
If you are shopping manufacturing ERP software this quarter, send the overnight job, the cloud account you already have, and the constraint you cannot break (a peak season, a quality hold, a finance close). We will tell you whether to buy a module, strangler a service, or stop.
